Mapplethorpe Exhibition | Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
The last time I was at the Guggenheim was when I was visiting New York as a tourist before making the big move. The energy and the rush of trying to see everything when you’re visiting in comparison to “oh, its there and I can just go whenever its convenient.” It had been so long since I last went, I can’t even remember what I saw last.
There is nothing like going to a museum or an art show and feeling inspired and hungry to go create works of my own (figuratively and literally).
Recently, portraiture is something that I have taken an interest in and starting to take more of. There is something special about capturing that intimate and vulnerable moment that the subject only shares with me.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mapplethorpes black and white portraits and his self portraits at this exhibition. Mapplethorpes work is focused on the classical aspects of beauty, whether they be in portraits, nudes, florals or self portraits- this is seen across his body of work.
